30's fashion: evening dresses

As anticipated, i'm going to show you the dresses I sew for the New Year's Eve party, along with the original fashions that inspired them.
I got the idea while searching in internet for some Myrna Loy outfits for Ofelia, and I came across these beautiful pictures:

Veronica
Evening dresses are not exaclty my greatest passion, as you can see browsing my blog so far, but I really like this kind of design a lot

Agata
So I sew the first dress, and then the New Year's Eve party was on its way!!!

Ofelia
I made two versions of this one, is the one I like best

Camilla
Caterina
And then, among the google result I came across this one, which is from the late 20's, but I loved the oversized ribbon idea

Vittoria

As you see I only picked the general line of the dress, and used satin instead of the softer fabric of the original dresses.
Just to be prepared for next year (and not having to face Cecilia's anger) I'm going to add three more of  these dresses for the tall (FR2) girls: Cecilia, Giada and the new Dania (she doesn't have a name yet).

  1. Hi Billa! It's great to see the gowns in detail, they are stunning! I love the 20s and 30s glamorous style a lot, you captured the grandeur and style perfectly! Love the fabrics you used too, great job!!!
Coincidentally I'm starting on an evening gown myself, the Golden Globes did this to me LOL!

  4. All gorgeous... Camilla's is the one I keep coming back to, as it's such an interesting cut, an the pale-on-pale is so artistic with her coloring.

    1. Thank you SP! Camilla, Veronica and Vittoria's are the best ones (IMHO). I like Camilla and Ofelia skintone. the other girls have got a porcelain-blueish color which is very difficult to photograph!

  5. Billa, I think you did an exceptional job at interpreting the gowns in the pictures. As someone who was actively engaged in fashion design education for many years, I am amazed at your eye to brain to hand coordination in all of this. (Sorry, that's the teacher in me talking!) By changing up the fabric, you've created a thoroughly modern design that's truly your own. Your first dress is outstanding from the color to the cut! BTW.. trying to find fabric that will drape on the doll like what you see in the photos is tricky. As slinky as silk charmeuse (2nd vintage pic) is on the human body, it won't hang quite the same at 1/6 scale. The closest I've come to finding something that will drape like what you see in those vintage photos is a fine rayon jersey. As is, though, I applaud the gowns you created here and can't wait to see more!

    1. Thank you April, I love to have you teacher point of view, it is very interesting and useful for me! (speaking of hand to brain coordination, my tennis teacher wouldn't believe it either, she sais I'm a dog! LOL). I knew that jersey would have been better to recreate the drapings. I also had some silk charmouse at hand, but I was in a hurry, so I picked this taffetà (I had a lot of it in different colours), which is easier for me to sew.
Some of the silhouettes didn't turn out exactly as I expected (hoped for), but they look fine enough. I believe that Veronica, Camilla and Vittoria are the better ones.
The last I sew was Agata's and it shows. I was running out of time for the New Year's eve photosession. I'll try to refit it or I'll have to make it all over again...
I still have a couple of designs I want to try!
      Kisses Billa

    1. Thank you, you are reading them all, I'm flattered! I know from your blog you can appreciate style, and these fashions (the originals at least) are the ephitomy of style IMHO. You can still find these chairs on e-bay, they are not too expensive.
