Extra: Some of the guys get a face enhancement

I wasn't 100%  satisfied with the faceup of some of the guys, so I checked all the available internet resources  and found out I had just what I needed:
Caran D'Ache Prismalo Aquarelle Pencils! In fact I have a huge box I used for coloring some of my drawings some time ago.

By the way a sample of my drawings (these are illustrations for a short novel I wrote a couple of years ago for my nephews):

so, I picked the colours I needed, sharpened the pencils and with patience started working on the guys.

I damped the tip of the pencil with mi tongue, ok, this is not ladylike, but I did it anyway and these are the results:

Goffredo has got his new mustaches

Enrico had such a bland coloring, now with his new lips I think he's really handsome

Armando got mustaches and lip enhancement

Giacomo has got freckles!!!

As with hair styling I limit myself to little touches, just to have the dolls look exactly how I envisioned them when I bought them.

What do you think?

  2. Billa, your illustrations are quite charming. Have you done anything else with this talent (children's book illustration)? (I ask because I was a fashion illustrator in another life.) Your use of watercolor pencils is intriguing. Does this mean you can remove it should you desire, or will it stain? I tried to redo a doll's lipstick using nail polish with less than appealing results. I like the effect of the pink lips on Enrico. The freckles are adorable on Giacomo, too!

    1. Thank you April! I always liked to draw, at times I helped as illustrator (a hundreds years ago) for some underground publications, but it is just a passtime. Children's illustration is something I made as a game for my nephews.
I don't know if this kind of paint is removable. Actually I was looking for something permanent so I really don't know. It has been a couple of weeks since I made the repaints and it looks pretty stable, no change in colours or exfoliation.
Depending on the kind of colour of the pencil you cand get glittering or opaque effect.
I know that aquarel pencils are used to do repaints on resin dolls, I'll let you know if I notice some changes or degratation!
      Giacomo is super sweet now!

    2. Acrylic paint works pretty well for repaints. The trick is getting it to the right consistency. I've been using the thick Liquitex paints with limited success, and I am going to try the craft quality, since it's more fluid. I used to be worried about color fading, but I painted a table with cheap paints in 2000, and it's holding up beautifully.

  7. Hi Billa, your illustrations are lovely! The make-overs are a success, I especially love the freckles :-). Did you make the colour pencils wet? To fix the colors, you can use varnish for acrylic paints (matte or glossy). I use the brand "Galeria" and it's very good. Your boys look even more handsome now then before, great job done! Hugs xxx

    1. To be honest we don't get them in Italy either. I bought nearly all my IT dolls on e-bay, I think they are really beautiful
